School Improvement Planning
Our School Improvement Plan sets out our shared priorities and ambitions for the year ahead. It captures the key areas we will focus on together to strengthen our practice, build on our successes and create meaningful opportunities for our whole school community.

Stronger Together, Reaching High from 3-16.
The Ethos and the Environment
At Sandwick Junior High School, our ethos goes beyond learning & teaching. We believe in nurturing the whole child, promoting resilience, happiness, and develop skills for life long learning. Set against the backdrop of Shetland’s beautiful South Mainland, our campus offers an environment where pupils transition seamlessly through a 3-16 approach to education.

Our pupils are happy, resilient, achieving.
“Having the opportunity for our children to be educated in the same school community from the age of 3 right through to 16 is something really special. Sandwick’s unique 3–16 setting means children grow, learn and develop alongside familiar faces, building strong relationships and a real sense of belonging throughout their school journey.” Parent/Carer Feedback, 2026
Our Departments
Across our four departments — ELC, Primary, Secondary and Support for Learning — our staff work closely together to provide a nurturing, inclusive and supportive environment where every learner can thrive. Each department brings its own expertise and strengths, while working collaboratively to ensure continuity, progression and positive experiences for all our pupils.

“Sandwick has been a big part of our lives. We’ve grown up together, made friendships and memories that we’ll take with us, and had teachers who have supported us along the way. Being part of a 3–16 school has given us a real sense of belonging, and we’ll always be grateful for the experiences we’ve had here.”

At Sandwick, kindness, connection and a sense of belonging are at the heart of everything we do, creating a nurturing environment where everyone belongs.
